A blank canvas used to scare me, all kinds of not so positive thoughts came into my head as I looked at a large white, blank expanse. Then it occurred to me that I could start by working small and incorporating many of the things that I loved about book and box making into my canvases. Textures, 3-D elements and creating small intimate spaces on a larger canvas have given me the courage to work on 2D mixed media pieces. Often my work starts by creating a textured background and then I deconstruct mono prints or other texture items to create my story on a flat surface.
Now, when I am in the midst of creating a body of 2 dimension work for a show, I am often at my happiest! I have even graduated from small 6"x6" to working on canvases as large as 30"x 24".
